India and Brunei Enhance Strategic Partnership Amid South China Sea Tensions
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah have elevated their bilateral relationship to an 'enhanced partnership'. The talks focused on defense, trade, and investment, highlighting India's commitment to development and freedom of navigation, in a context directed at China's territorial expansionism in the South China Sea and East China Sea.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that India endorses a 'policy of development, not expansionism', a statement seemingly aimed at China. This came as he concluded a bilateral visit to Brunei, where the two nations reiterated their dedication to 'freedom of navigation' in regional waters.
During the visit, India and Brunei elevated their relationship to an 'enhanced partnership'. Modi and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah engaged in extensive discussions covering defense, trade, and investment. Modi’s statement underscored India's support for development, shunning expansionist policies.
The leaders agreed on the necessity of finalizing a Code of Conduct in the contested South China Sea region. They emphasized ASEAN Centrality, adhering to international laws including UNCLOS, and promoting peace, stability, and lawful commerce. Modi's visit, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations, aims to strengthen collaboration in various sectors.
