Two Russian ballistic missiles struck an educational facility and nearby hospital in Poltava, central-eastern Ukraine, resulting in the death of at least 41 people and injuring 180 others, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday.
Officials reported that the strike occurred in Poltava, the capital of its namesake region, located approximately 110 kilometres from the Russian border and 350 kilometres southeast of Kyiv. This attack is considered one of the deadliest since the war began over 900 days ago on February 24, 2022.
'One of the buildings of the Institute of Communications was partially destroyed. People were trapped under the rubble, and many have been saved,' Zelenskyy announced in a video posted on his Telegram channel. He added that all necessary services are involved in the ongoing rescue operation and has ordered a full investigation into the incident. The Defence Ministry of Ukraine described the strike, which occurred shortly after an air raid alert, as 'barbaric.'
