Pakistan's veteran politician Mehmood Khan Achakzai has stunned both his allies and adversaries by announcing his willingness to negotiate with the military establishment to resolve the current political stalemate.
Achakzai, president of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), made this revelation on the National Assembly floor, stating, "I will hold negotiations. I will talk to every institution. I will also talk to the establishment," adding that these talks aim to offer the military an honorable exit.
This statement follows Defence Minister Khawaja Asif's heated parliamentary debate regarding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party's attempts to engage with the military. Appointed as the leader of the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), Achakzai is mandated by PTI, which seeks dialogue with the army, to mitigate its political struggles. PTI, led by jailed former PM Imran Khan, insists on addressing the military rather than the government, amidst accusations of electoral fraud and political persecution.
