Myanmar's military government will conduct a national census next month to compile voter lists for an upcoming general election and analyze population and socioeconomic trends. Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing announced on Sunday, framing the census as vital for future development projects. The census will run from Oct. 1 to Oct. 15 across the nation, despite ongoing civil conflict.

The National Unity Government (NUG), which leads the pro-democracy struggle, expressed skepticism regarding the military's intentions and advised caution in complying with census questions. They warned that any data collected could be misused by the military junta, which they label as a 'terrorist organization.'

Min Aung Hlaing stated the "ultimate mission" of the ruling State Administrative Council is to hold a "free and fair multiparty democratic election'', although a specific date remains unannounced. Critics argue that any election held by the military would lack legitimacy, as key opposition figures, including Aung San Suu Kyi, remain imprisoned and media freedoms are severely restricted.
