National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah stated on Monday that the decision of separatist leaders to join mainstream parties and contest elections in Jammu and Kashmir reflects an ideological transformation within the secessionist faction.

"Earlier, they (separatists) would always call for election boycotts. Today, they are contesting the elections... It shows an ideological change," Abdullah told reporters in the Kangan area of Ganderbal district.

The former chief minister asserted that the separatists' participation in elections supports the National Conference's stance that violence is not the solution to issues.

"We have consistently maintained that democratic means are the way forward. If they (separatists) have embraced democracy, it is a success for us—regardless of which political party they join," he added.

When questioned if separatist leader Syed Saleem Geelani joining the PDP in 2002 was evidence of secessionist support for the PDP, Abdullah declined to answer.

Commenting on Satya Pal Malik's statement about Ram Madhav's appointment to oversee the BJP's election campaign in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah highlighted the former governor's close ties with the ruling party.

"He would know best; he was sent here by the BJP, and whatever happened in 2019 occurred under his supervision," he noted.

When asked if Madhav's role was to facilitate a BJP-PDP alliance, Abdullah stated that the BJP would have the authoritative answer.

"However, there is no doubt that Madhav has strong relations with the PDP. He was instrumental in forming the BJP-PDP alliance in 2014 and might be here for a similar purpose again," he concluded.
