Political Shake-Up: New Nominee for Jakarta Governor
Anies Baswedan

Indonesia's largest political party has nominated cabinet secretary Pramono Anung as its candidate for Jakarta governor, sidelining early favorite and vocal government critic Anies Baswedan.

The nomination comes after a week of political drama and protests against President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's efforts to consolidate power through proposed election law revisions, which were recently canceled by parliament. This paved the way for the expected nomination of Anies by Indonesia's Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).

Despite his popularity and previous tenure as governor, PDIP ultimately chose Pramono Anung due to his extensive political experience. Anies, who had alleged unfair government intervention in his campaign, did not immediately comment on the decision.
