Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has voiced deep concern over India's low conviction rate for rape cases, which stands at 26%. He has called for the institution of a stringent anti-rape law that ensures trials and convictions occur within a 50-day timeframe.

Banerjee's statement, posted on social media platform X, included a chart illustrating the number of rapes and atrocities against women in India over the past 15 days, following the tragic incident at RG Kar Hospital. 'This collage stands as a stark reminder of the state of affairs in India as the nation fights for justice against rape,' Banerjee remarked.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Banerjee stressed the need for immediate and severe punishment for offenders, lamenting that 74% of offenders currently escape unpunished. His comments come as students prepare to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, an event that has sparked nationwide outrage and demands for justice.

In anticipation of the protest, West Bengal police have heightened security measures around the state secretariat 'Nabanna,' deploying riot control equipment and blockades. The hospital, meanwhile, is gradually returning to normal operations as patient numbers rise, following days of upheaval after the incident.
