Vasant Chavan, the Congress MP representing Nanded in Maharashtra, has died at 69 in a Hyderabad hospital after suffering from prolonged renal issues. His death marks an end to a distinguished political career, beginning from grassroots-level politics to significant roles in state and national legislatures.
Chavan, who became a Lok Sabha member for the first time in 2024 by defeating BJP's Pratap Patil Chikhlikar, stood out for his resilience against personal health challenges and organisational setbacks. He successfully navigated the 2024 elections despite notable defections, including that of former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to the BJP.
Prominent Congress figures, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra, expressed their condolences, emphasizing Chavan's lifelong dedication to Congress ideals. Kharge highlighted Chavan's journey from a Gram Panchayat member to a stalwart of the Congress party, while Gandhi-Vadra mourned the profound loss. Chavan's last rites will be held in Naigaon.
