In a significant political development, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, has renewed calls for a caste census, rekindling debates on the contentious issue. Union Minister Chirag Paswan has thrown his weight behind the initiative, emphasizing its necessity for fair implementation of government schemes that consider caste demographics.
Paswan, recently re-elected as the National President of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), asserted the party's longstanding support for a caste census during the National Executive meeting held in Ranchi. He argued that accurate caste data is crucial for proportional allocation of funds and effective integration of diverse castes into the mainstream.
Rahul Gandhi, speaking at the Samvidhan Samman Sammelan in Prayagraj, criticized the media for neglecting farmers and laborer issues. He pledged that a Congress-led government would conduct a caste census and remove the 50 per cent cap on reservations, stressing the need for comprehensive data on caste participation in various sectors.
