In a significant move, the Supreme Court has constituted a National Task Force designed to formulate an action plan aimed at preventing violence against medical professionals and ensuring their safety in the workplace. This decision follows the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata.

The Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has lauded this initiative, urging for immediate actions against the TMC in the next court hearing. He emphasized the necessity of addressing the violent incidents on August 9 and August 14, implicating the involvement of the Kolkata police and state government in these disturbances. Adhikari also highlighted the disallowance of the victim's final rites according to Hindu rituals and the misrepresentation of her death as a suicide.

During the hearing, a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud underscored the urgency of implementing preventive measures swiftly. The Court criticized the West Bengal government for a delayed FIR registration and condemned the public dissemination of the victim's identity and graphic images. This suo motu cognisance by the Supreme Court aims to forestall another tragedy as more women enter the workforce.
