On Monday, Hamas and another Palestinian militant group claimed responsibility for a failed bombing attack in Tel Aviv that killed the attacker and wounded a bystander.
The explosion, which occurred late on Sunday, came as mediators were working on a cease-fire agreement in the devastating Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The bomb appeared to have detonated prematurely, raising questions about whether it was intended for a suicide attack or remote detonation.
Tel Aviv's district police commander, Deputy Commissioner Peretz Amar, stated that the blast occurred a few meters from a synagogue crowded with people at evening prayers. The premature detonation outside on the street helped prevent a potential tragedy with multiple fatalities, Amar noted.
Authorities are investigating the suspect, who was seen on security footage with a large backpack, and are working to determine his origins and whether he had any accomplices. Israeli police and the Shin Bet security agency confirmed in a joint statement that the explosion involved 'a powerful explosive.'
In a Monday statement, Hamas claimed responsibility along with the smaller Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, threatening further attacks 'as long as the occupation's massacres, displacement of civilians, and the continuation of the assassination policy continues.' This statement referred to recent strikes attributed to Israel, which have killed senior militants, as well as the broader ongoing conflict in Gaza ignited by Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel.
Historically, Palestinian militants conducted numerous suicide bombings in Israel during the 1990s and 2000s, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Although Hamas and other groups have shifted away from such tactics, opting instead for shootings, stabbings, car ramming attacks, and rocket fire, the current situation highlights persistent and escalating tensions.
