Sri Lanka's Election Commission has officially approved President Ranil Wickremesinghe to run in the upcoming presidential election set for September 21. Wickremesinghe is among 39 candidates who registered and submitted their nomination papers by the deadline, marking a pivotal moment in a country facing its worst financial crisis in decades.
Wickremesinghe, 75, a veteran politician and lawyer, has served as prime minister six times. Although his party holds only one seat in parliament, he has garnered support from over 90 lawmakers. However, his re-election bid lacks formal backing from the dominant Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party.
Key challengers include Sajith Premadasa, a 57-year-old opposition leader who heads the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). Premadasa advocates for modifying the $2.9 billion IMF bailout program to reduce living costs. Another notable candidate is Anura Kumara Dissanayake, 55, who champions anti-corruption and better governance. Namal Rajapaksa, representing the powerful Rajapaksa family, and Nuwan Bopage, with a strong anti-corruption stance, are also in the race.
