Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hosted Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas for critical talks centered on the long-standing conflict in Gaza, Erdogan's office disclosed ahead of Abbas's address to the Turkish parliament on Thursday.
During the discussions, Erdogan emphasized the Israeli "massacres" in Palestinian territories and outlined necessary steps towards a long-term cease-fire and peace. His office also highlighted Erdogan's commitment to intensifying international pressure on Israel, particularly from the Islamic world, to facilitate humanitarian aid and peace efforts.
Abbas's visit comes amid escalated regional tensions, with fears of broader conflict following the assassination of Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh. Erdogan, a staunch Hamas supporter, organized this meeting after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's U.S. Congress address in July raised concerns. Abbas is slated to address Turkish lawmakers on Thursday in Ankara.
