Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar criticized the West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday, questioning the safety of women in the state following the death of a female post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor. Majumdar alleged that while the state government might conceal data in the National Crime Records, the reality indicates women's safety is in peril.
Majumdar suggested the possibility of rape, based on the injury report indicating internal damage. He noted that police have not provided a clear statement yet. Additionally, Majumdar believes more than one person was likely involved, based on circumstantial evidence. He reiterated that despite any attempts to portray the state as safe, recent incidents betray a different story.
Earlier, both Majumdar and BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul visited the deceased doctor's residence. Paul called for a CBI investigation and insisted on a re-postmortem at a Central Government hospital, due to irregularities in the initial postmortem. She expressed suspicions of rape and murder, citing the undignified state in which the body was found.
In parallel, doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi protested on Saturday, demanding a CBI inquiry. Carrying posters and chanting slogans, they showed solidarity with the late PGT doctor. BJP's Suvendu Adhikari also pushed for a central investigation into the case.
