Brazil's government has expelled Nicaragua's ambassador, Fulvia Patricia Castro Matu, in a reciprocal response to Nicaragua's expulsion of Brazilian ambassador Breno da Costa.

Brazil's foreign ministry confirmed the move, citing the principle of reciprocity after da Costa was ousted for missing the 45th anniversary of Nicaragua's Sandinista revolution. Tensions between President Daniel Ortega and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, once allies, have intensified over the past year.

Lula's previous support for Ortega waned due to the Nicaraguan leader's crackdown on religious figures and disregard for international appeals. The diplomatic fallout has led to a freeze in relations, with both countries halting official visits and meetings. Despite the expulsion, Brazil clarified that diplomatic relations are not completely severed.
