U.S. Prioritizes Release of Citizens Detained by Taliban
The U.S. State Department emphasizes the release of three detained Americans in engagements with the Taliban. Ryan Corbett, Mahmood Habibi, and George Glezmann remain a priority. The department, led by spokesperson Matthew Miller, continues to advocate for their return, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken actively coordinating the efforts.
The United States intensifies efforts to secure the release of three detained citizens held by the Taliban, according to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. These individuals, Ryan Corbett, Mahmood Habibi, and George Glezmann, have been detained under various circumstances since August 2022.
Ryan Corbett, who has lived in Afghanistan for over a decade, and Mahmood Habibi, an employee of a U.S.-based communications company, were both detained following the Taliban's rise to power. George Glezmann was later detained while visiting Afghanistan as a tourist. The U.S. administration remains deeply concerned about their welfare, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently meeting Corbett's wife in Washington to discuss ongoing efforts.
The State Department has labeled Corbett and Glezmann as 'wrongfully detained,' intensifying government resources allocated to their cases. Although Habibi has not yet received this designation, officials are reportedly working nonstop to ensure his release.
