Yahya Sinwar Named New Hamas Leader Amid Gaza Conflict

Hamas has selected Yahya Sinwar, its top official in Gaza, as its new leader following the death of Ismail Haniyeh. Sinwar, known for masterminding the October 7 attacks in Israel, will now head the group's political bureau.

According to a Tuesday statement from Hamas, Sinwar steps into his new role amid the ongoing conflict that has intensified since the deadly attacks. Haniyeh was killed last week in Iran, reportedly by an Israeli strike.

Sinwar has maintained a low profile since orchestrating the attacks that resulted in the death of 1,200 Israelis and the capture of approximately 250 hostages, leading to Israel's prolonged campaign in Gaza.
