West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Akhil Giri from his position as the Correctional Home Minister, as reported by official sources.

The move comes with provisions that allow Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to investigate the allegations of misconduct against a female forest department official. The ruling Trinamool Congress had earlier requested Giri to step down in light of these allegations.

According to an official statement, the file approving Giri's resignation was sent to the Raj Bhavan on Monday. However, this action does not absolve Giri of his responsibility regarding the misconduct accusations. ''The CM may exercise her option to initiate an enquiry into the alleged misconduct of Giri to reestablish public faith in the system,'' the Raj Bhavan said in a statement on X.

On Monday, Giri resigned from his ministerial position a day after TMC leadership asked him to apologize to the female forest department official he allegedly threatened and verbally abused.

Despite the pressure, Giri, a TMC MLA from Ramnagar, stated he would not apologize to any official.

Giri, who has been with the TMC since its foundation in 1998, said he intends to write a detailed account to the CM explaining the circumstances leading to his actions.

Videos showed Giri, surrounded by locals, threatening forest ranger Manisha Sahu on Sunday. He was seen warning her about reducing her tenure after her team cleared encroachments on forest department land near Tajpur beach. Notably, Giri had previously faced public backlash for controversial remarks about President Droupadi Murmu in 2022, for which Mamata Banerjee had to publicly apologize.
