Bharatiya Janata Party Assam MP Dilip Saikia on Tuesday raised the alarm over India's swiftly increasing population in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour. He urged the government to implement a 'National Population Control Policy'. According to Saikia, India now experiences the fastest population growth in the world, marking it as a critical issue for the nation.

The MP pointed out that India's population is disproportionately large relative to its area. Saikia supported the call for a National Population Control Policy by presenting arguments related to illiteracy, enhanced medical facilities, child marriage, social security, and superstition. Saikia mentioned, "Every year, the world's population increases by eight crores, with India contributing two crores. In India, 52 children are born every minute," highlighting the rapid growth.

Saikia emphasized that population growth has long been a significant challenge for India, leading to various issues like environmental pollution, poverty, unemployment, food shortages, housing, education, and healthcare problems. He stressed the importance of taking measures to address these issues and control population growth. The MP urged the Central Government to consider a robust National Population Control Policy to avert a potential population explosion, noting the limited resources and healthcare services available in the country.
