China's Symbolic Sanctions Against US Lawmaker Over Domestic Interference
China has sanctioned US Congressman Jim McGovern for interfering in China's internal affairs. This symbolic move includes freezing his nonexistent Chinese assets, barring transactions with him, and denying him entry visas. McGovern criticized China's human rights record, calling the sanctions 'absurd' and a 'badge of honor.'
China has sanctioned a United States lawmaker, Rep. Jim McGovern, for "frequently interfering" in China's domestic affairs. This move is part of China's ongoing displeasure with US political criticism of its policies.
Although McGovern has no assets or business dealings in China, the sanctions symbolically freeze his theoretical assets, prohibit transactions with him, and deny him and his family visas to China, said a statement from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On social media platform X, McGovern dismissed the sanctions as "absurd" and vowed to wear them as a "badge of honour." He urged Chinese leaders to improve their human rights record, accusing them of oppressing Tibetans, committing genocide in Xinjiang, and cracking down on democracy in Hong Kong.
Beijing has previously sanctioned several US lawmakers and former officials, including prominent supporters of Taiwan like Rep. Michael McCaul. McGovern's recent legislation supporting Tibet further strains relations, as Congress approved the bill in June, which President Joe Biden signed into law in July.
