With a leadership change imminent in the West Bengal Congress unit, both the CPI(M) and TMC are monitoring potential shifts in the political landscape ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
Currently, the Congress-Left alliance is opposing the TMC and BJP in West Bengal. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a vocal critic of the TMC, resigned as president of the West Bengal Congress post the Lok Sabha elections. AICC general secretary for West Bengal, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, confirmed the search for a new state unit chief is underway.
The upcoming change could alter political dynamics. For instance, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a triangular contest saw TMC winning 29 seats, BJP 12, and Congress 1. A senior TMC leader noted Chowdhury's departure might open opportunities for a more cooperative relationship between TMC and Congress.
