Southeast Asia Diplomats Discuss South China Sea, Myanmar Crisis, and Regional Tensions

Top diplomats from Southeast Asia convened in the Laotian capital with key dialogue partners on Saturday, addressing territorial claims in the South China Sea, escalating violence in Myanmar, and regional rivalries during the final day of a three-day summit.

The meetings in Vientiane included allies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)—such as the United States, China, Russia, Japan, India, and Australia—to enhance their relationships and discuss pressing security issues.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said ASEAN's partnership with Washington should contribute to global peace and respect for international laws. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed hopes of close collaboration on these matters, including Myanmar and North Korean provocations.
