West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Wednesday advised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to refrain from making politically-motivated comments regarding the current situation in Bangladesh, stressing that such remarks could influence India's external affairs.
The Governor's comments came after Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud expressed objections to Banerjee's offer to provide shelter to people from Bangladesh amidst ongoing protests in the neighboring country.
Bose's advice was publicized through a post on X by the Raj Bhavan, urging Banerjee to consider the diplomatic ramifications of her statements.
In a widely shared video on X, Mahmud stated, "With all due respect to Mamata Banerjee, her statement has the potential to create confusion among people. Therefore, we have communicated our concerns to the Indian government." The communication was made via diplomatic channels.
Banerjee made her controversial remarks during the TMC's Martyrs Day rally in Kolkata, and echoed similar sentiments on her X account, pledging sanctuary for distressed Bangladeshis.
BJP's Amit Malviya criticized Banerjee, sharing a video of Hasan's remarks and labeling her as a source of embarrassment not only for West Bengal but also for India.
