Kenyan President William Ruto has nominated four members of the main opposition party to a new 'broad-based' cabinet, describing it as a 'visionary partnership for the radical transformation of Kenya.' The move comes in response to nationwide protests, which have claimed over 50 lives.

Included in the appointments is John Mbadi for the finance ministry. However, the unity government has faced sharp criticism from activists who describe it as a corrupt bargain. Prominent activist Boniface Mwangi has decried opposition leader Raila Odinga, accusing him of betraying the people by forming a coalition with Ruto.

Despite Ruto's shelving of $2.7 billion in tax hikes following six weeks of protests, demonstrations continue with renewed calls for his resignation and anti-corruption reforms. Activists plan additional protests, citing government corruption and the co-opting of opposition as key issues.
