Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has claimed that Trinamool Congress MLA Tapan Chatterjee verbally abused and attempted to assault him within the assembly precincts. The incident reportedly occurred around 12.20 pm at the lower lobby where Chatterjee allegedly rushed towards Adhikari and used abusive language in front of other MLAs and reporters.
In a letter to Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay, Adhikari expressed his insecurity on the assembly premises and demanded appropriate action against Chatterjee. He also partially blamed the Speaker for the situation, citing the recent prohibition of personal bodyguards in the assembly.
This is the second such incident involving ruling party members, according to Adhikari, who stressed that opposition MLAs are not safe in the assembly. He urged the Speaker to take responsibility as the custodian of the House. The Speaker has since initiated an investigation into the allegations.
