Lukashenko's Controversial Proposal: Political Prisoners to Clear Storm Damage
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko suggested using political prisoners to clear storm damage, ignoring calls for their release. Human rights accusations persist, with international figures urging the release of about 1,400 detainees. Lukashenko, who maintains power with Russian support, has been criticized for his harsh practices, including during the 2020 election crackdown.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has proposed using political prisoners for storm damage cleanup, defying international demands for their release. His refusal to address human rights concerns continues as prominent figures call for the release of approximately 1,400 detainees.
Lukashenko's controversial stance follows a history of dismissing human rights abuse accusations. In the past week, he has faced intensified calls from former Nobel laureates and U.N.-mandated experts to free political detainees. Most of his opposition remains imprisoned or has fled the country.
Amid claims of a rigged 2020 election, Lukashenko quashed protests and retained power with Russian President Vladimir Putin's support. In 2022, he further aligned with Putin by permitting Belarusian territory to be used in the invasion of Ukraine.
