France's National Assembly retained Yael Braun-Pivet from President Emmanuel Macron's centrist party as speaker on Thursday after a chaotic early election led to a hung legislature.

Braun-Pivet, 53, has led the National Assembly since 2022 and secured her position with 220 votes compared to communist lawmaker Andre Chassaigne's 207, thanks to support from Macron's centrist allies and some conservatives.

The parliamentary election resulted in a division between three major political blocs: the leftist New Popular Front, Macron's centrists, and the far-right National Rally party, with none securing an outright majority.
