DMK party leaders and cadres are advocating for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin's son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, to be promoted to Deputy Chief Minister. A senior party leader emphasized that this move could provide a significant advantage in the 2026 Assembly elections.
DMK Organising Secretary R S Bharathi underscored that the final decision lies with CM Stalin, although he acknowledged the widespread support for Udhayanidhi's elevation within the party. The speculation follows Udhayanidhi's appointment as Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development in December 2022, a year after his election victory in the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency.
Udhayanidhi's involvement in campaigning displayed his political prowess, notably his symbolic protest against the stalled AIIMS project in Madurai, which contributed to the party's electoral success. His promotion could continue the legacy of his grandfather, M Karunanidhi, and father, M K Stalin, who both served in high political offices.
