California Rep. Adam Schiff on Wednesday became the highest-profile Democrat to call for President Joe Biden to drop his reelection bid. The party is moving ahead with plans to hold a virtual vote to formally nominate Biden in the first week of August, two weeks before the party's convention.

Schiff's statement follows almost 20 Democratic members of Congress urging Biden to withdraw after his recent debate performance against former President Donald Trump. According to an AP-NORC poll, nearly two-thirds of Democrats nationwide think Biden should step aside for a new candidate. Schiff stated, 'While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden's alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch.'

In response, the Democratic National Convention's rules committee will meet to discuss and finalize the virtual vote plans. Although an early roll call vote wouldn't guarantee Biden's nomination, it remains crucial for ensuring he meets the requirements to appear on Ohio's presidential ballot. As confidence in Biden wanes, party leaders face growing internal pressure and concerns over unity.
