Naveen Patnaik Directs BJD MLAs to Scrutinize Government Departments

BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik has mandated that party MLAs closely observe the functioning of different government departments and raise pertinent issues in the Odisha Assembly, according to a party release on Wednesday.

The Biju Janata Dal, with 51 MLAs including Patnaik in the 147-member assembly, has allocated various departments to its legislators for detailed monitoring and active participation in assembly interventions, the release noted.

The opposition should act as a watchdog for public interests in democracy, the release highlighted, adding that thorough scrutiny of the state government's departmental performance can safeguard the rights of Odisha's residents.

This marks the first time Patnaik assumes the role of Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly. The 17th session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly is set to start on July 22, featuring an address by Governor Raghubar Das, with the 2024-25 budget presentation slated for July 25.

The BJP, having secured 78 seats, has formed the government in the state, while the BJD acquired 51 seats, Congress 14, CPI (M) one, and three seats went to independent candidates.
