The body of former Sikkim minister RC Poudyal was found in a canal near Siliguri in West Bengal nine days after he went missing, police reported on Wednesday.

Poudyal, 80, was discovered floating in the Teesta Canal at Fulbari on Tuesday, officials stated.

Police suspect that the body might have been carried downstream by the Teesta river. They identified Poudyal through his watch and clothing.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to search for the veteran politician after he disappeared on July 7 from Chota Singtam in Pakyong district.

The investigation into the cause of death will continue, a police officer confirmed.

Poudyal had notable roles as the deputy speaker in Sikkim's first assembly and later as the state's forest minister. He was a pivotal figure in Sikkim's late '70s and '80s political scene, founding the Rising Sun Party and had a deep understanding of the state's cultural and social aspects.

Chief Minister PS Tamang expressed his condolences, calling Poudyal a distinguished senior political leader and statesman who served Sikkim in various capacities, including as a minister and leader of the Jhulke Gham Party.
