First Minister Vaughan Gething of Wales announced on Tuesday that he will resign after a scandal involving campaign donations. This decision follows the resignation of several government members demanding his resignation.

Gething, who made history as the first Black leader of a UK government, faced heavy criticism for accepting £200,000 ($255,000) from a recycling company during his leadership campaign. The company's owner had been guilty of environmental violations and health and safety breaches.

Gething's leadership weakened significantly after the nationalist party Plaid Cymru ended their cooperation arrangement with his minority Labour government, and he lost a nonbinding no-confidence vote in Wales' parliament. He acknowledged that hopes for a summer of reflection and renewal were not feasible.
