The Congress has questioned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on his efforts towards obtaining special category status for the state. The demand comes in light of the NITI Aayog's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index 2023-24 report, which several Bihar ministers argue validates their need for increased central financial assistance.

Released on July 12, the NITI Aayog SDG India Index assesses the country's sustainable development and places Bihar at the bottom, despite some improvements. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted that senior Bihar ministers believe the report strengthens their position on seeking special category status for central assistance.

Ramesh critiqued Kumar for inaction, mentioning that under special category status, 70 percent of central assistance would be a loan rather than 10 percent. He urged Kumar and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to take decisive steps. The sentiment was echoed by other Bihar leaders demanding urgent central financial assistance to support the state's development.
