Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, embarked on a journey to Hathras from Delhi early Friday morning, confirmed Congress leaders.

State Congress chief Ajay Rai announced, ''Rahul ji departed for Hathras from Delhi at approximately 5:10 AM.''

Accompanied by state Congress in-charge Avinash Pande, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate, and other officials, Gandhi aims to meet the families affected by the Hathras stampede tragedy that claimed 121 lives at a religious gathering. Rai criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for the incident.

''The Hathras incident is a clear failure of the UP government. Yesterday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak visited Hathras separately, highlighting internal conflicts,'' Rai stated at UPCC headquarters.

Reiterating the Congress's demand for compensation, Rai called for Rs 1 crore for the families of the deceased and Rs 25 lakh for the injured.

He also pressed for a judicial inquiry led by a sitting High Court judge, as opposed to the three-member commission headed by a retired judge that the Uttar Pradesh government formed on Wednesday to investigate the Hathras tragedy, amid speculations of a conspiracy.
