India has expressed grave concerns about its nationals serving in the Russian armed forces during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, calling the issue a matter of 'utmost concern'.
This follows the recent deaths of two Indian citizens in the conflict, increasing the number of Indian casualties to four.
The Ministry of External Affairs has called upon Moscow to halt the recruitment of Indians and expedite the repatriation of those already in service. 'We have taken up the matter with the Russian side for early release and repatriation of Indians recruited by the Russian army,' said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
So far, efforts have resulted in the release and repatriation of ten Indian nationals. 'We continue to be in touch with the Russian authorities both in New Delhi and Moscow,' Jaiswal added. The MEA is also working closely with Russian counterparts to transport the mortal remains of the deceased back to India.
