Shiv Sena legislator Neelam Gorhe was on Monday unanimously elected deputy chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Gorhe is the second woman deputy chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, J T Sipahimalani being the first.

Sipahimalani was Council deputy chairperson from August 1955, when it was known as the Bombay Legislative Council, till April 1962, by which time the state of Maharashtra had been formed. The state was created on a linguistic basis in 1960 under the States Reorganisation Act.

Council Chairman Ramraje Nimblkar announced Gorhe's appointment to the post. In his congratulatory speech, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, while speaking in the Council, said, "Gorhe started her career in Yuvak Kranti Dal, a socialist organisation. She was active in Dalit Panther and subsequently became a Shiv Sena leader and legislator." Gorhe, a third-time MLC, had filed her nomination for the post in 2015 as well but later withdrew it.

Every term has a tenure of six years, which ends in April 2020.
