The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Kerala government and police authorities over the death of a nursing student who was allegedly driven to attempt suicide due to harassment. The incident, reported from Kasaragod district, has raised grave human rights concerns.
The student was initially hospitalized in Mangaluru but was later transferred to Kozhikode Medical College, where she succumbed after spending three months in a coma. The NHRC's intervention seeks to unravel the circumstances that led to this tragic outcome.
The commission has demanded a comprehensive report from the state's chief secretary and the police chief within four weeks. Fellow students have accused the hostel management of subjecting the deceased to continuous mental harassment, even during her illness.
