An Indian fisherman, Gaurav Ram Anand, 52, died by suicide at Malir Jail in Karachi, Pakistan, according to a jail official on Thursday. Anand's death highlights ongoing tensions and challenges faced by fishermen detained in foreign waters.
The incident occurred when Anand allegedly hanged himself in the washroom of his barrack. Detained since February 2022 for illegal fishing, his body has been shifted to the Edhi Trust mortuary for formalities before being handed over to his family.
Pakistani and Indian governments conduct regular prisoner exchanges as a goodwill gesture. However, welfare concerns persist for around 190 Indian fishermen still in Pakistani custody, often suffering from depression and anxiety due to their circumstances.
