The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 11 Indian fishermen on suspicion of poaching in the island nation's waters, according to an official statement from the Navy.
The arrests occurred during a special operation off Delft Island in the northern sea region. The apprehended fishermen have been brought to Kankasanthurei Harbour and will be transferred to the Fisheries Inspector of Mailadi for legal action, the statement said.
The issue of fishermen accidentally crossing maritime boundaries is a long-standing point of tension in Indo-Lankan relations, particularly in the Palk Strait, which offers rich fishing opportunities to both nations.
