Germany's foreign minister has expressed cautious optimism regarding U.S. involvement in mediating the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, applauding Washington's efforts to broker peace.
However, she warned against the potential pitfalls of dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting that authentic dialogue is not possible if ceasefire agreements are persistently linked to fresh demands and concessions.
Speaking at a climate conference in Berlin, Annalena Baerbock said, "It is also good that the United States is trying to take on a mediating role here. At the same time, we must not fool ourselves, and above all, we must not allow ourselves to be blinded by the Russian president."
