At least 54 people lost their lives in a military airstrike on a local market in Sudan's western village of Tora, aid groups reported Tuesday. The strike, which occurred on Monday, sparked a massive fire, adding another layer of tragedy to the war-torn region.

According to Adam Rejal of the General Coordination, a local organization assisting displaced individuals, this attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents since the conflict between Sudan's military forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into open warfare in April 2023.

While the Sudanese military denies targeting civilians, calling such allegations unfounded, rights groups label the airstrike a systematic war crime. They are urging for an independent investigation to hold those accountable, as the ongoing conflict has claimed over 28,000 lives and caused widescale hunger and displacement throughout the nation.
