In a substantial move to address overcrowding, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta declared on Tuesday that Tihar Jail will be relocated to the outskirts of Delhi. The government has earmarked Rs 10 crore in the upcoming budget for necessary surveys and consultancy work.

Tihar Jail, one of India's largest prison complexes, was initially designed for 10,025 inmates but now accommodates over 19,000, posing significant security and logistical challenges. The government is initiating new prison complex developments in Narela to alleviate the pressure.

Further plans include a society that will oversee the skill development and rehabilitation of inmates, alongside preferring jail-produced goods in government procurement. Although no relocation date has been specified, this move aims to improve the welfare and rehabilitation prospects of the prisoners significantly.
