In a significant legislative update, the Lok Sabha has passed the Boilers Bill, 2024, which aims to modernize boiler safety regulations and protect life and property from potential dangers associated with steam boilers. The new bill replaces the obsolete Boilers Act of 1923.
The bill, which seeks to streamline regulations and promote ease of doing business, has received approval from both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, now awaiting presidential assent to become law. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the removal of colonial-era redundancies and the bill's simplified structure.
Addressing issues of safety and legal clarity, the legislation specifies obligations for qualified personnel in boiler repair. Despite political debates, the bill maintains essential criminal penalties for severe offences while decriminalizing certain others to benefit users, including those in the MSME sector.
