Judge Orders Transparency for Secretive Government-Downsizing Unit
A federal judge has mandated the release of records from the Department of Government Efficiency, allegedly operating under unusual secrecy, to enhance transparency. This follows the watchdog group's lawsuit claiming DOGE's critical role in Trump administration layoffs. The judge deemed DOGE subject to the Freedom of Information Act.

A federal judge has ordered transparency from the government-downsizing unit led by a team created under President Donald Trump. The Department of Government Efficiency, directed by billionaire Elon Musk, must disclose its operational records following claims of 'unusual secrecy.'
Judge Christopher Cooper ruled in favor of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), finding the department likely a proper subject for the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). This ruling challenges the Trump administration's stance that the department was exempt.
The judge noted DOGE's capacity to significantly alter federal programs, thus the necessity for disclosure. CREW initiated the lawsuit, emphasizing public and congressional right to information. The White House has yet to comment on the ruling.
