The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has voiced opposition against the Polavaram dam project in Andhra Pradesh, citing adverse impacts on tribal communities. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has vocally opposed the BJP-led central government's support for the Polavaram dam project in Andhra Pradesh. The party has pledged support for a mass protest organized against the project, citing severe impacts on Odisha's tribal communities and local environments.
Debi Prasad Mishra, BJD's coordination committee chairman, expressed that the project could submerge numerous villages in the Malkangiri district, adversely affecting Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh inhabitants. Although no decision has been finalized regarding BJD president Naveen Patnaik's attendance at the February 28 rally, the commitment to the cause remains firm.
The BJD's objection focuses on alterations in the dam's design, which Misra argues do not account for tribal welfare. Criticism has been directed at BJP for remaining silent and allowing these changes, backed by substantial financial commitments. Despite similar opposition from Congress, they have opted not to join the BJD-led protest, citing differing stances.
