Punjab Farmers' Stand: Hunger Strike Intensifies Tensions with Government

The Punjab government is making determined efforts to persuade farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal to receive medical treatment as his indefinite hunger strike reaches its 37th day. Former additional DGP Jaskaran Singh led efforts to engage with Dallewal and other farmer leaders in discussions.

The Indian Supreme Court had granted the state a deadline of December 31 to persuade Dallewal to seek hospitalisation, allowing the government to request logistical support from the Centre if needed. A court order will be followed up on January 2, ensuring Dallewal's compliance for hospitalisation.

Tensions continue as farmers press for demands including legal guarantees for minimum support prices, debt waivers, and justice for Lakhimpur Kheri violence victims, amid growing concerns for Dallewal's health. Despite court pressure, Dallewal remains steadfast in his refusal for medical aid unless the Centre addresses key farmers' demands.
