The Maharashtra government has established a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the murder of Massajog sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh, authorities announced on Wednesday.

The SIT is led by Crime Investigation Department's Deputy Inspector General, Basavraj Teli, according to an official order from the state Home department.

Deshmukh was reportedly abducted and brutally murdered on December 9 for allegedly resisting an extortion attempt by individuals demanding money from a windmill company. Massajog villagers staged a 'jal samadhi' protest, ending after reassurances from Superintendent of Police Navneet Kanwat about apprehending the three absconding suspects.
