Tehran announced on Monday the arrest of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala on charges of breaching the Islamic Republic's laws, as reported by state media.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Sala entered Iran with a journalist visa on December 13 and was arrested six days later. The Italian embassy was notified post-arrest, and Sala was allowed consular access and family contact by phone during her detention.
Italy's foreign ministry is engaged with Iranian authorities to ascertain the legal situation and detention conditions of Sala, who works for Il Foglio and is held at Tehran's Evin prison. The situation is reminiscent of past instances where Iran has detained Western journalists during diplomatic negotiations.
