A tragic incident unfolded in Bihar's Siwan district, where one individual lost his life, and two others were hospitalized after consuming what is suspected to be spurious liquor, according to police reports. The incident occurred on Thursday, drawing attention once again to the state's illicit liquor challenges.
Police investigations revealed that Umesh Rai, a resident of Naviganj Tola, along with Amarjeet Rai and Ashok Rai, consumed an intoxicant the previous night. Their condition deteriorated swiftly, leading to their urgent medical admission. Tragically, Amarjeet Rai succumbed to the effects, while Umesh and Ashok remain under medical supervision.
This incident highlights the persistent issue of illegal alcohol consumption in Bihar, a problem that lingers despite a comprehensive statewide ban imposed by the Nitish Kumar government in April 2016. Historical parallels exist, as a similar tragedy occurred just last month, claiming 37 lives across multiple districts. Official acknowledgments note that over 150 individuals have perished due to illicit liquor since the ban's inception.
