On World Diabetes Day, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, a renowned diabetologist, called for a unified and collaborative approach to combat the diabetes epidemic in India, which has seen a dramatic rise in cases. Addressing a distinguished audience, including Dr Peter Schwarz, President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Dr. Singh highlighted the global theme for this year, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,” stressing the need for accessible and affordable care for all individuals affected by diabetes.

Bridging the Gaps in Diabetes CareIn his address, Dr Jitendra Singh emphasized that India faces a significant healthcare challenge, not only in treating diabetes but also in addressing gaps in healthcare accessibility, awareness, and treatment adherence. He revealed that nearly half of those diagnosed with diabetes remain unaware of their condition, and many struggle to maintain regular treatment due to financial constraints or lack of information. He termed this a “systemic gap” that must be addressed through both public and private sector collaboration.

Introducing "PPP Plus PPP" for Comprehensive Diabetes Solutions

Dr. Singh introduced a novel concept, the "PPP plus PPP" model – a dual-layered approach involving domestic public-private partnerships (PPP) within India, as well as collaboration with international PPPs. He outlined how this model would strengthen India’s healthcare infrastructure, promote innovation, and facilitate global expertise in addressing diabetes care challenges. The Minister underscored that this framework would accelerate progress, improve healthcare accessibility, and drive scalable solutions for managing the disease.

International Collaboration for Effective Solutions

The Minister expressed optimism about collaborating with Dr. Peter Schwarz and the International Diabetes Federation, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in improving diabetes care in India. He emphasized the potential of learning from global models and adapting best practices to suit India’s unique healthcare needs. "With leaders like Dr. Peter, we have the potential to enhance diabetes care in India by learning from successful global models," said Dr. Singh, emphasizing that international cooperation would be essential in transforming the diabetes landscape in the country.

Advancing Accessible Diabetes Monitoring Tools

Dr. Singh also highlighted the Ministry of Science and Technology’s initiatives aimed at making diabetes management more accessible. He spoke about the development of smart, non-invasive monitoring devices, which empower patients to manage their condition more effectively. The Minister shared updates on ongoing efforts to create cost-effective medical devices and AI-driven solutions, in line with the government’s commitment to making healthcare affordable and accessible for all.

A National Response to Diabetes Care and Prevention

Concluding his address, Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed that diabetes care and prevention should not be left solely to medical professionals but require a national response. This, he said, should involve healthcare providers, policymakers, families, and communities working together to bridge the gaps in awareness, care, and treatment accessibility. He emphasized that diabetes is a national issue affecting millions and that collective action is necessary to tackle it effectively.

Dr. Jitendra Singh’s message, delivered on World Diabetes Day, serves as a call to action for all stakeholders to unite and work toward a future where diabetes care is within reach for every individual in India. Through this collaborative effort, India can strive to close the gaps in healthcare access, diabetes education, and sustainable treatment solutions, ultimately ensuring that every citizen receives the care they deserve.
